South Island braces for winter storm with snow and heavy rain on the way

From Wednesday on, the South Island will experience a severe weather event, MetService says.

Forecasters expected Moke to produce as much as 10 inches of total rain across the Big Island, and up to 15 inches in some isolated places, enough to cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides for the windward and southeast slopes.

Tropical Storm Moke continues to churn in open waters in the Central Pacific, just days after Hurricane Lala left widespread destruction across Hawaii.

Tropical Storm Moke was on a path to sideswipe Hawaii on Saturday but still be potent enough to produce heavy rain and life-threatening flooding.

For the second week in a row, Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island, faces threats from an intensifying storm.

It will be sunny and warm to kick off Saturday, but the rainy weather won’t be far behind.

A slow-moving storm that formed from a tropical depression is meandering off the coasts of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, raising the risk of prolonged heavy rain across northern Vietnam over the next several days.

Heavy rain is expected for western areas of the South Island on Saturday, ahead of severe gales, high waves and snow on Sunday.
