A mother and her 5-month-old baby died after a boat capsized in New York waters. CBS News' Anna Schecter reports.

In a statement to Global News, the NYPD said police received a 911 call reporting an overturned vessel in the vicinity of Liberty Island on Saturday at 10:25 p.m. local time.

U.S. federal prosecutors have taken over the case against the captain of a boat that capsized Saturday night in the busy waters near the Statue of Liberty, killing a young mother and her 5-month-old daughter, as authorities investigate what caused the boat to overturn.

Investigators are examining whether the motorboat was carrying more passengers than allowed.
