Hurricane Lala is expected to gradually weaken after the eye of the storm passed the southern tip of Hawaii's Big Island without making landfall, but heavy rainfall could produce flooding and mudslides as tens of thousands of homes are without power.

The Category 1 hurricane could bring up to 25 inches of rain, life-threatening flooding and mudslides as Hawaii declares a state of emergency.
