Zimbabwe: Lake Kariba Boat Disaster - 15 Dead, Dozens Still Missing

[New Zimbabwe] FIFTEEN people have so far been confirmed dead, and dozens others are still missing after a District Development Fund boat capsized on Lake Kariba on Tuesday afternoon.

Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Unit says the ferry was carrying more than its capacity of 90 people when it capsized.

The vessel is said to have overturned after being hit by strong waves.

Search and rescue operations were deployed on the huge lake which is teeming with Nile crocodiles and hippopotamuses - there were 114 adult passengers onboard at the time

Locals are said to use the ferry to get from rural parts of the region to the town of Kariba, which is on the north side of Lake Kariba, close to the border with Zambia.
