Zambia says it arrested opposition figures on night of elections

LUSAKA, Aug 17 - Zambian police arrested several leading opposition figures on the night of national elections last week, accusing them of posing a threat to state security, the government said.

Security forces in Zambia have seized weapons and arrested 11 people, including senior opposition figures, allegedly involved in an insurrection plot, the government has said.

The authorities allege they were involved in an insurrection plot but the leading opposition candidate says there was an attempt on his life.
