Yayoki Kusama exhibit in A'dam Stedelijk Museum turned into tribute after artist's death

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who splashed her signature polka dots on paintings, sculptures and museum installations around the world, has died, her studio said.

Frustrated with the confining nature of Japanese society, Kusama left for New York at 27, where she quickly made a name for herself with her paintings, inspired by hallucinations of flashing lights, dots and flowers she had seen since childhood

The artist was best known for her dot-covered paintings and pumpkin motifs.

A statement on her website stated that the artist died in a Tokyo hospital on Aug 14.
