Wildfires spread across Europe as thousands evacuated

Wildfires are spreading across Europe, forcing evacuations and causing deaths and major damage. Greece, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany and the UK have all battled severe fires, with Croatia also seeing multiple blazes and arrests over suspected arson.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Saturday afternoon that Europe was on "high wildfire alert" and that there was increasing pressure on Eastern European nations.

A wildfire in Croatia killed one person, injured 40 and forced 1,200 people to evacuate, while Greece, France and England also faced major fires.

Officials say the blaze, near the port town of Omis, is one of the worst in Croatia's history.

Firefighters worked through the night as the blaze took hold in the hills around the Dalmatian seaside resort of Omis, destroying houses and cars.
