Wildfires near Bordeaux and Madrid under control as some evacuation orders lifted

144,000 of more than 220,000 displaced people were able to return home in districts west and south-west of Bordeaux

BORDEAUX, France, ATHENS/MADRID, July 31 - France and Spain won some respite from days of devastating wildfires on Friday as huge blazes near Bordeaux and Madrid were brought under control, although fires continued to burn in Greece and western Spain.

Firefighters are battling wildfire flames that have displaced thousands and destroyed communities across Europe. CBS News' Ramy Inocencio spoke with fire crews and locals in the Bordeaux region of France about their efforts to protect the area.

The Manitoba Emergency Management Organization says the fire situation has improved, and residents of O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation can return.
