Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers on Saturday marked five years since sweeping back to power.

International organisations and the UN say the Taliban have struggled to address the natural and humanitarian crises Afghanistan has faced over the past five years, in part because Afghan women are under severe restrictions.

Taliban rulers and other male officials gathered at Afghanistan’s traditional assembly hall to celebrate the fifth anniversary of their return to power. There were no women present.

The Taliban marked five years of rule after US troops' withdrawal in 2021, which the group said was the result of 'morale, courage and divine assistance'.

The Taliban government celebrated five years of ruling Afghanistan on Saturday, with flags galore and convoys of military vehicles, while critics decried tightening restrictions in all areas of daily life.

Hundreds of Afghans gathered around a square beside the former US embassy, with men, boys and young girls packed into pickup trucks and waving white Taliban government flags.

The Taliban government has formed ties with several countries, including in Europe, but is still only recognised by Russia.

August 15 marks five years since the fall of Kabul and the return of the Taliban.

Neighboring capitals now engage with Kabul over regional trade routes, while American and European officials are negotiating with the regime in the name of counterterrorism and the return of failed asylum seekers to Afghanistan.
