Luigi Mangione on Friday entered a guilty plea in his federal case, admitting he shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel in 2024. CBS News' Katrina Kaufman and Jessica Levinson have more.

Paulette Thompson faced Luigi Mangione in court as he pleaded guilty to federal charges, admitting he 3-D printed a gun and shot her husband.

The family put out a statement saying, "Today’s guilty plea marks an important step toward justice for Brian and for our family."

When the judge asked Luigi Mangione whether he understood that he could spend the rest of his life in prison, he answered, "Yes".

Luigi Mangione said Friday he is pleading guilty to both counts of federal stalking charges connected to the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a major development that could complicate Manhattan prosecutors’ separate murder case against him. Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to
