Flames are tearing through Spokane in Washington state, forcing more than 60,000 to evacuate. Neighborhoods are obliterated with shells of homes left behind. NBC’s Morgan Chesky reports for TODAY.

Videos from Spokane - the second most populus city in Washington - show huge plumes of smoke and roaring fires close to nearby houses.

Wildfires in eastern Washington forced 5,000 home evacuations, destroyed about 600 buildings and continued to strain firefighting resources.

A total of 1,000sq km (386sq miles) has burned across Washington state, and some of the fires have not been contained.

NEW YORK, Aug 2 - Around 60,000 people have been ordered to evacuate as wildfires threaten the city of Spokane in Washington state, local officials said Sunday, adding the fires in the region had destroyed 600 buildings, including homes and businesses.

Firefighters were hopeful that weather conditions in Washington state could improve their efforts, but worried that fire might spread to a canyon, where it could expand rapidly.

Thousands of people have been evacuated.

The fires burned more than 21 square kilometres around Spokane, the second largest city in Washington, and were among dozens across the western U.S.

A wildfire dubbed the Old Trails fire jumped the Spokane River on Saturday afternoon and crossed into the city, the Spokesman-Review newspaper reported.
