Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the tanker had been attempting to pass through the waterway illegally when it was struck by two mines and caught fire.

"We will take retribution" against the US for striking Larak Island, a spokesperson for the IRGC told state broadcaster IRIB on Sunday evening, adding that Iran "will punish those responsible."

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in a statement carried by Iran's state broadcaster noted "the martyrdom and injury of several of our fighters and compatriots" after the U.S. bombed targets in the Strait of Hormuz.
