US Senate passes sweeping sanctions targeting Russian energy revenues

US Senators have passed a punishing sanctions package against Russia targeting the country’s energy revenues that are helping to fuel its war against Ukraine.

Legislation implements aggressive economic sanctions, including 100 percent tariff on Russian oil and gas importers.

The US Senate has passed a sweeping sanctions package targeting Russia's energy revenues.

It also includes expanded sanctions on Iran sought by U.S. President Donald Trump as lawmakers moved to finally hold a vote on the measure well over a year since it was first introduced on April 1, 2025.

A vote in the House will not take place until at least early September.

The package would impose sanctions on Russian officials, oligarchs, financial institutions and the so-called shadow fleet used to evade restrictions on Moscow's oil exports. It would also allow President Donald Trump to set tariffs of up to 500% on Russian imports, including gas and oil.

The bill proposes tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries continuing to purchase Russian oil, putting India among the nations in its crosshairs.

The bipartisan legislation, which passed the Senate 86-11, would penalize countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas and other exports seeking to deprive Putin of revenues fueling the war.

The legislation was championed by Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican whose sudden death last month helped spur quick action on it.
