Donald Trump says Russia has freed Robert Gilman, who had been jailed since 2022, after President Vladimir Putin approved his release on humanitarian grounds.

A US citizen and former military serviceman has been released after four years in prison in Russia. President Trump said the release was not part of any exchange and expressed appreciation to Russia's Putin.

Gilman was arrested and detained in Russia in 2022, accused of assaulting a police officer following an incident on a train in Voronezh, to the south of Moscow.
