US lifts sanctions on Iraqi airline allegedly linked to IRGC

"FBA (Fly Baghdad Airlines) has demonstrated major changes to their operations such that their listing is no longer warranted," the official said.

A Treasury Department official said that the removal of sanctions was not indicative of a shift in US policy towards Iran or the IRGC, or negotiations to end the conflict in the Middle East.

Fly Baghdad was sanctioned in January 2024 over alleged links to Iran's IRGC-Quds Force, accusations the airline had denied.

Aug 5 - The U.S. Treasury said on Wednesday it had removed counter-terrorism sanctions from Iraq's Fly Baghdad Airlines and two aircraft that were imposed in 2024 over links to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, citing changes in the airline's behavior.

However, US Treasury maintains its sanctions against a man previously identified as the company's owner, Basheer Abdulkadhim Alwan al-Shabbani

The United States on Wednesday lifted sanctions targeting Iraq's Fly Baghdad airline, a company it had previously designated for alleged links to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The airline was previously sanctioned for “providing assistance” for the IRGC and its proxy groups in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
