WASHINGTON, Aug 21 - Top trade negotiators from Canada and the U.S. met for the third day running in Washington on Friday to try to finalize a trade deal before threatened new American tariffs come into effect on Saturday.

It was the second time this week the two leaders have spoken, with little clarity on the status of talks after weeks of intense negotiations.

The U.S. is scheduled to impose more tariffs on Canada, hitting about $20 billion dollars worth of goods, as trade negotiations between the two neighboring countries hit an impasse.
