US Army to build nuclear microreactors on military bases, $2.2 billion awarded to five companies

So-called microreactors are tiny factory-built nuclear plants that developers say will be easily transported and generate up to 20 megawatts of power each.

The US Army has announced a plan to install what it calls nuclear microreactors at five of its bases across the country. The move would ensure the facilities' energy independence from the rest of the electric grid.

More than 20 reactors will be installed within five years, with at least one going into service by the end of Sept 2028.

Five companies selected by the Army will be awarded up to $2.2 billion in total over five years to own, construct and operate the microreactors, if they hit set milestones along the way for their performance.
