Russian investigators say they have opened a criminal case into what they qualified as a terrorist attack 800km east of Moscow, saying that Ukraine had struck residential areas and that a child was among those civilians killed.

The death toll is one of the highest among Russian civilians in recent months, as Ukraine seeks to disrupt Russia's oil supply.
