Ukraine drone strike on Russian oil-refining city kills 12 people

A Ukrainian drone strike on the central Russian region of Tatarstan killed at least 12 people in one of the deadliest attacks carried out by Kyiv since the war began more than four years ago. The strikes are also directly impacting Russian's economy. Our correspondent Emmanuelle Chaze tells us more.

Ukraine launched hundreds of drones at targets inside Russia, according to Russian officials. The strikes killed more than a dozen in one of Kyiv's deadliest attacks since the Russian invasion began over four years ago.

MOSCOW, Aug 10 - At least 12 people were killed and injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on industrial and civilian targets in the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan region - the site of a major oil refinery - state media reported on Monday.

Three people, including a child, were killed in the Kyiv region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Ukraine is chronically short of air defense munitions, making it very difficult for air defense forces to intercept Russian ballistic missiles.

Meanwhile, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is today making his first official visit to Serbia – a rare European country still closely aligned with Moscow.

Attack comes as US Senate passes new Russia sanctions and Kyiv appeals for air defence interceptors.
