Typhoon Dolphin causes severe flooding in Shanghai, grounds hundreds of flights across east China

Many streets in Shanghai, the country's second most populated city, were flooded, including in the main commercial centers.

The weather system has lost power after making two landfalls along the coast of Zhejiang province on Sunday, with China's National Meteorological Centre (NMC) issuing its least severe typhoon alert on Monday morning.

Tropical Storm Dolphin dumped heavy rain in eastern China on Monday, causing flooding in places after making landfall as a typhoon the previous day.

A red alert was issued by the China Meteorological Administration, the second time this year after Typhoon Noul in late July.

Typhoon Dolphin hit China's eastern coast Sunday evening after forcing over 300,000 people to preemptively relocate and Shanghai's two airports to cancel more than 1,300 flights. The storm brought heavy rains to northern Taiwan the day before.

Torrential rain and storms in Typhoon Dolphin's wake have swept through several provinces in China's east, drenching the coastal region and flooding streets in Shanghai, the country's second most populated city.

Even as it weakens, Typhoon Dolphin is disrupting life in China. Close to 1,500 flights have been canceled in Shanghai while parts of Beijing are under flood alert.

The storm, which made landfall on Sunday evening, is the strongest to hit China this year and also caused flooding in parts of the Philippines.
