Typhoon Dolphin batters Japan's Okinawa before bearing down on China

The storm has cut power to at least 44,000 buildings and injured five people on the Japanese island.

Typhoon Dolphin lashed Japan's ​southern Okinawa prefecture on Saturday, injuring six people and cutting power to more than 50,000 buildings, while China shut ports ‌and halted ferries ahead of the storm's expected arrival on its east coast.

Five elderly people have suffered non-life-threatening injuries, with three falling due to the wind in Japan.

The typhoon recorded maximum sustained winds of 162kmh with gusts reaching 216kmh.

Forecasters predicted that areas could see 200-400 mm of rainfall over the next few days in China as Typhoon Dolphin approaches land on Saturday.

A typhoon is lashing Japan's south, causing injuries and blackouts. It is now headed for China, where ports have been closed in preparation.

The storm left five people injured and cut power to 14,000 buildings in the prefecture.
