Two Frankfurt Airport workers have died of malaria after a rare outbreak led to six employees contracting the serious infection spread by mosquitoes.

An unusual cluster of malaria cases at Frankfurt Airport infected six employees, two fatally. Mosquitos brought in on an aircraft are thought to have caused the infections.

The outbreak is being investigated by Frankfurt’s Public Health Department, with officials trying to establish how the workers became infected.

It is believed the mosquitoes arrived at Germany's busiest airport on a plane, according to German public health officials.

Four other infected employees are being treated in hospital.

Six employees in total were infected – five survivors are receiving medical care

According to the RKI, Germany’s last outbreak of airport-based malaria was in 2023. The rarity of the condition means diagnosis can be delayed, increasing the chances of severe symptoms.

The cause of the infections is believed to be a mosquito that travelled by plane from a malaria-endemic area to Germany, likely in July.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the episode involved an Airbus A350 operated by French Bee, a French low-cost airline.
