President Trump said he was delaying the 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports after the two countries reached a last-minute deal less than two hours before the sanctions were to go into effect.

The two allies traded goods and services worth close to $1 trillion despite their strained relations last year, as US President Donald Trump continues his relentless push to enforce tariffs and levies on his northern neighbours.

Two sources said one of the main sticking points was US tariffs on Canadian vehicles.

The new tariffs would have affected about US$20 billion worth of Canadian imports. Businesses warned of job losses and disruption to vulnerable sectors including lumber, wine and dairy.

The announcement, which Trump made on his social media platform, buys time for more negotiations and avoids, for now, another strain in already tense relations between the historic allies.

Trump's import taxes would have hit about 5 per cent of what Canada ships to the United States every year.
