Tropical Storm Lala nearing Hawaii, hurricane warning issued for Big Island

Tropical Storm Lala could bring heavy rain, high winds and dangerous surf and rip currents to the Hawaiian Islands as a hurricane this weekend, forecasters say.

Tropical Storm Lala formed Thursday in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to become a hurricane while approaching the Big Island of Hawaii, where it could bring heavy rain and flooding this weekend, forecasters said.

Tropical Storm Lala continues to track through the central Pacific Ocean and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches the Big Island of Hawaii.

Forecasters have warned the system is expected to reach hurricane strength as it approaches Hawaii's Big Island.

Areas around Tokyo have recorded 360mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to Friday, causing widespread chaos and damage, while Hawaii prepares for Tropical Storm Lala.

The Pacific storm is currently gaining strength, according to the US National Weather Service.
