A total solar eclipse on Wednesday plunged Spain’s Segovia into daytime darkness for 59 seconds. Perched high up on the city's iconic cathedral bell tower, locals and visitors from and wide watched, in awe, as the moon’s shadow blotted out the sun.

Total darkness swept over Keflavik, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) southwest of the capital Reykjavik, at 5:47 pm (1747 GMT).

The eclipse, a first in mainland Europe since 2006, also cast its shadow through parts of Greenland, racing south to smother part of Iceland before arcing across the Atlantic Ocean towards northern Spain.
