The prolific British stage, screen and voice actor was best known for his starring roles in the cult ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, ‘Clue’, ‘It’ and ‘Muppet Treasure Island’.

Curry appeared in numerous movies, often as a hammy villain, was nominated three times for a Tony Award for Broadway roles, and performed voice work in many animated films and TV shows.

Curry, who suffered a stroke in 2012 that put him in a wheelchair, died Wednesday (local time) at his home in Los Angeles, according to his longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz.

The gender-bending role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter put Curry on the map in 1975. He then went on to play a number of villainous roles like Gomez Addams, Pennywise and Bill Sikes, but also Mozart and William Shakespeare.

Curry was best known for playing the outlandish Frank-N-Furter in cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
