Three firefighters killed in Crete and mainland Greece as wildfires ravage southern Europe

“Unbelievable” winds have fuelled the fires now spreading across pockets of Greece, after devastating parts of France and Spain.

On Wednesday, three Greek firefighters died battling blazes during high winds on Crete and on the mainland, and two more were lightly injured.

The deaths on Crete brought a fatal new dimension to a wildfire emergency stretching from the Atlantic coast to the eastern Mediterranean.

Firefighters have continued to battle a wildfire in south-west France which covers an area four times the size of Paris.
