The head of the U.N. food agency is warning that the fastest growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded is leaving thousands more people hungry in eastern Congo

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is worsening the region's food insecurity, according to the World Food Program's acting Executive Director Carl Skau who described the situation as a “crisis on top of a crisis.”

The UN emergency food agency appealed for immediate funding on Wednesday, warning that deepening hunger is undermining the response to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that has now infected more than 3,200 people.

The ongoing outbreak, is unlike most previous Ebola outbreaks because the Bundibugyo virus responsible for it has no approved vaccines or treatments.

Healthcare workers at an Ebola treatment centre in Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo, have gone on strike.

The report, which covers data up to Saturday, showed that 571 patients have recovered, while 773 others remain in isolation and under medical supervision

The latest figures highlight the scale of the epidemic, though expanded surveillance and retrospective case finding have also contributed to the rapid rise in reported infections.

The case count climbed to 3,200 on Saturday from 2,344 a week earlier, while the death toll has almost doubled in the past two weeks to 1,405.

The announcement came as around 100 health workers went on strike at an Ebola treatment centre in Bunia, the epicentre of the outbreak.
