Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced plans to rename Nashville International Airport after Dolly Parton following a petition with over 155,000 signatures.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) announced a proposal Friday to rename Nashville’s airport in honor of Dolly Parton, following the late country music star’s death earlier this week.  “Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said in a statement announcing this proposed change.  “

Long before 80-year-old Parton died Tuesday, fans in January 2025 started an online petition calling for officials to rename Nashville International Airport in her honor. It got renewed attention following Parton's death, jumping to more than 155,000 signatures Friday.

Bill Lee announced Friday that the state plans to rename Nashville International Airport after country music icon Dolly Parton, calling the move a lasting tribute to her “indelible legacy” and the generations of people she inspired across Tennessee and around the world. Lee said he spoke with
