Sylvia Park shooting: Man fatally shot by police was on community detention

He was facing a charge of taking a Subaru Legacy when he was killed on Thursday.

The family of 33-year-old Hapai Ropata Clyde Otene say they are struggling to process his death after the father-of-five was shot by police near Sylvia Park.

RNZ understands the 33-year-old had four previous convictions for firearms offences and was sentenced to four years in prison in 2023 for aggravated robbery.

A 15-year-old boy who was fatally shot in West Garfield Park last month has been identified.
