Sweden to hand over seized Russian 'shadow fleet' ship to Ukraine

Sweden will hand over to Kyiv a seized Russian "shadow fleet" cargo ship which Ukraine suspects of transporting grain stolen from its occupied territory, Swedish court documents obtained by AFP on Thursday showed.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, the vessel, seized at the start of March, was carrying stolen Ukrainian grain. Sweden's Supreme Court upheld previous rulings ordering the shipowner to hand the boat and its cargo over to Kyiv.

Moscow's "shadow fleet" consists of vessels used to skirt Western sanctions. They are often ageing ships in poor condition, without proper insurance and with opaque ownership.
