Activists have called on New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani to denounce and cancel the event due to the organisation's targeting of minorities.

RSS chief Bhagwat is scheduled to speak at a Manhattan event on Saturday. The event's website casts the August 29 gathering as the "Universal Oneness Celebration" bringing together the Hindu American community.

The New York City Mayor also clarified that he is unsure if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event in the U.S.

"I don't support the rally, but I don't know if the city has any jurisdiction to cancel a private event," Mamdani, who is the first Muslim and Indian American mayor of New York City, said.

Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is scheduled to speak at a Manhattan event on Aug 29.
