NASA scientists were verifying that a stray 8,800-pound section of a SpaceX rocket launched in January 2025 had crashed into the surface of the moon.

No confirmation yet, but 4-tonne Falcon 9 upper stage was expected to hit the moon early Wednesday morning

The 4-tonne part poses no risk to Earth, but it has revived the debate on space debris ahead of major space exploration missions like Artemis III.

'There is no danger to Earth,' said a NASA spokesperson. 'NASA will continue to track the booster for training purposes, as well as later observe the impact site for scientific purposes.'

The impact wasn't visible to the naked eye, but photos are expected to come from a lunar satellite at a later time.
