Spanish police evict migrants from makeshift beach camp in Ceuta

Spanish police evicted hundreds of migrants from a makeshift migrant beach camp in Ceuta, where they were staying after illegally crossing the Moroccan-Spanish border.

The government of Ceuta warns it will suspend beach-cleaning operations if migrants return following a second eviction attempt in just two days.

The arrests come after Spain's North African exclave saw a deadly border surge in late July, when tens of thousands of migrants entered Ceuta.

Police in Spain have arrested five people accused of charging migrants thousands of dollars to take them to mainland Europe from Ceuta, the Spanish territory in northern Africa that has seen a deadly migrant rush.

Spain began relocating migrants from a makeshift camp on Ceuta’s El Trampolín beach on Thursday, 20 August, nearly three weeks after a mass border surge left thousands living without adequate shelter in the North African enclave.
