Spain to impose border controls against Italy as row over Ceuta migrant influx intensifies

Italy introduced border controls following an influx of about 78,000 migrants from neighbouring Morocco into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

Spain called Italy's measures suspending its visa-free Schengen travel deal with Spain following the Ceuta crisis 'unfair, contrary to the EU's interests'.

"Italy will not accept ultimatums or impositions," the Italian government said in response to Spain's demand.

Spain has threatened to take "proportional measures" if Italy continues border controls on travelers from that country by Sunday.

Spain has told Italy it will impose entry checks on visitors unless Rome halts its controls by Sunday. Even though they don't share a land border, the countries entered a spat after the Ceuta border rush.
