The trip would be South Korea's first such commercial voyage to Europe via the Arctic, making it one of the few countries whose shipping firms have tested the route.

Located along Russia’s Arctic coastline, Arkhangelsk lies on the Northern Dvina River and serves as a major cargo centre connected to the Northern Sea Route. The NSR stretches about 5,600 km across Russia’s Arctic waters. Much of the route remains covered by thick ice for most of the year.

Global conflicts, tariffs and disruption around established trade routes have pushed shipping companies to look for alternatives. The Suez Canal route has become increasingly difficult to rely on.
