South Korea launches first container ship pilot voyage through Northeast Passage

BUSAN — South Korea will launch its first pilot operation of a container ship through the Northeast Passage on Saturday, as the government steps up efforts to develop new Arctic shipping routes and assess their commercial potential. The Panstar Acro, 2,758 twenty-foot equivalent units in size, operated by Panstar Line.

Reaching Europe from Asia via the Arctic is nothing new... Russia and China have used this route for years. But yesterday, South Korea sent its first container ship along this path to avoid the traffic blockade in the Middle East. Experts warn the shift could further accelerate the melting of polar ice.

Located along Russia’s Arctic coastline, Arkhangelsk lies on the Northern Dvina River and serves as a major cargo centre connected to the Northern Sea Route. The NSR stretches about 5,600 km across Russia’s Arctic waters. Much of the route remains covered by thick ice for most of the year.

Global conflicts, tariffs and disruption around established trade routes have pushed shipping companies to look for alternatives. The Suez Canal route has become increasingly difficult to rely on.
