Russia helped foil coup in Niger — Official

In a viral video interview, Viktor Voropaïev, Russian ambassador to Niger, said the Nigerien government requested its assistance in quelling the mutiny which lasted for hours between 28 and 29 August.

Russia has said its forces helped to repel Saturday's attempted coup in Niger.

Soldiers tried to attack a key military base early on Saturday morning, authorities say, but were thwarted.
