US defense industry pressed to boost output as munitions shortages raise security concerns amid Middle East tensions.

The memo comes as recent fighting with Iran used up more of the U.S. military’s already diminished stockpiles of advanced missile interceptors.

Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg wrote that industry leaders had 21 days to present plans to “drive significantly faster, more aggressive delivery schedules and/or increased production."

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, however, insisted that the move was part of a larger modernisation effort which predated the Iran conflict.
