US defense industry pressed to boost output as munitions shortages raise security concerns amid Middle East tensions.

Deputy Defense secretary Steve Feinberg wrote in a memo to defense industry leaders, “We must dramatically accelerate our program schedules and expand our production capacity now.”

The push comes amid growing scrutiny of the U.S. defense industrial base's ability to replenish advanced weapons inventories.

The memo comes as recent fighting with Iran used up more of the U.S. military’s already diminished stockpiles of advanced missile interceptors.

Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg wrote that industry leaders had 21 days to present plans to “drive significantly faster, more aggressive delivery schedules and/or increased production."
