The standoff in Qusra between Palestinian families and Israeli settlers who apparently want to push them out entered a new stage Friday as activists supporting the Palestinians marched toward the besieged homes to replenish their dwindling food and water supply.

Defense Minister Katz called for the military to turn over to the police the responsibility for protecting Palestinians after two West Bank families were besieged by violent settlers.

When Israeli extremists arrived in Qusra to force Palestinians from their homes, residents hoped the Israel Defense Forces would come to their aid.

From inside his home in the West Bank town of Qusra, Qusai Abu Rida watched on Friday as Israeli settlers moved from where they had erected a tent in front of his house to the valley below, rather than returning to the nearby outpost where they live.

“A stable West Bank keeps Israel secure and is in line with this administration’s goal to achieve peace in the region,” said a White House official.
