Omaha mayor said police have honored the school district's decision to ‘opt out’

Omaha’s largest public school district has stopped law enforcement officers from using gloves that deliver electric shocks in their work policing students

The Omaha Police Department held a news conference last week in which it demonstrated the glove, saying it quickly achieved compliance and control with little to no force. The gloves were used twice during the 2025-2026 school year, police said.

Omaha Police Department has suspended the use of electric shock gloves after they were used on two students in schools.

Parents in one community were surprised to learn the shock gloves soon to be used by ICE officers have been used in schools. Police say they won't use them after backlash and a request from the district superintendent. NBC News' Julia Ainsley reports.

Last week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would spend between $10 million and $20 million to buy gloves that emit painful electric shocks.
