Nigeria mass weddings ease financial burden for couples

For days, Nigeria’s government has been organising mass weddings to help low-income families overcome marriage cost.

Local officials says the state-sponsored event is a way to help low-income families cover marriage costs.

Celebrations have turned the northern Nigerian city of Kano into a riot of colour and excitement over the last week as 1,500 couples married at a mass wedding.

The scheme is for couples who cannot afford the significant financial costs associated with marriage.

The government describes the program as a way to support low-income families and promote social stability. Among those married were people who lost family members in violent attacks.

Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State says the state government has expended N1.5 billion on mass wedding programme, covering medical screening, dowry, furniture, and other items for the couples.
