On arrival, South Yorkshire Police officers searched the home and found the baby. Despite desperate efforts by paramedics, the newborn was pronounced dead at the scene.

An eyewitness and councillor representing the area, Gabriel Mbaukaan, told journalists by phone in Makurdi on Sunday that the baby was in an extremely critical condition when she was found, with maggots allegedly crawling around her body and a foul smell emanating from the carton.

Over the course of the weekend, the police stated, four people were arrested on suspicion that they had spat at the Armenian Cathedral of St. James in Jerusalem's Old City.
