NATO intern arrested in Belgium on suspicion of spying for China, source says

Public records and Claire Zhang’s social-media profiles indicate that she has a history of working at federal agencies in Ottawa

The Canadian woman currently behind bars accused of spying on NATO was vetted by Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) before she started working as an intern at the command centre of the military alliance.

A security source said the woman, identified as Claire Z, is in her 30s and not a student.

Following a closed-door hearing Tuesday, the Belgian federal prosecutor's office said the suspect would continue to be held in pretrial detention.

A Canadian intern accused of spying at NATO's military headquarters in Belgium has been denied bail and will remain in custody. Belgian prosecutors allege she spied for a third country and was part of a criminal organization.
