Mother drowns saving son in Des Plaines River near Libertyville forest preserve

A mother died saving her son who slipped under the waters of the Des Plaines River near a Libertyville forest preserve Sunday night. Around 7 p.m., the woman entered the river at Independence Grove to help her son and after helping him reach a family member, she went underwater, the Lake County Forest Preserve said.

Emergency services were called after the youngster was seen entering the water on Saturday at about 6pm.
