A shipwreck believed to be over 2,000 years old has been discovered off the coast of Sicily near Mazara del Vallo, and the site features incredible items from the Roman period.

Italian divers have found a 2,100-year-old shipwreck off the coast of Sicily, with hundreds of ancient clay jars known as amphorae that carried wine.

The wreck, dubbed by Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli as “one of the most important underwater archeological discoveries of recent years”, was found some three miles off the coast of Mazara del Vallo.

The ocean floor was piled high with hundreds of well-preserved amphorae, which were likely used to transport wine.
