Morocco says it aims to stop new migrant surge to Spain's Ceuta on August 15th

Moroccan authorities on Wednesday announced measures to counter a new influx of migrants to the Spanish territory of Ceuta, after monitoring a new wave of online disinformation.

The misleading posts were spread across social media, giving migrants the false impression that Spain had relaxed its rules and that people who reached Ceuta by sea would be allowed to stay.

The tens of thousands of people who illegally entered Ceuta last month sparked Spain's biggest migrant crisis in years.

The British network Sky News reported on Tuesday, citing "police sources" in Spain, that about 75 migrants who had joined the illegal mass invasion of Ceuta had reached the mainland of the country, contradicting assurances by the socialist government that this was not the case.

Claims swirled that Morocco, perhaps spurred by Israel and the United States, organized a recent border disaster. That unproven speculation, experts said, was exacerbated by the region’s complicated history.

At least 72,000 people poured into the 7.1-square-mile Spanish territory on July 30, and now rumours are circulating that a new attempt is being organised.

The migrant crisis has underscored Madrid’s increasingly tenuous geopolitical position.
