The pay raises of up to 80% for members of the Nigerian armed forces come as Islamist insurgents such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province continue their attacks in the country.

According to him, the highest increment for junior personnel is a direct recognition of those who bear the greatest burden in the nation's counter-insurgency and internal security operations.

Junior soldiers, who make up much of the military’s frontline fighting force, received the largest percentage increase, suggesting the government is directing the biggest pay improvements to personnel most actively engaged in combat operations.
