Michigan cyclosporiasis cases rise 11 per cent in a week to nearly 14,000

The outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce from Mexico, raising concerns about the safety of fresh produce across the US.

Michigan on Thursday reported 13,909 cases linked to an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an increase of roughly 11 per cent from last week, as the state continued to account for the bulk of cases in the multi-state outbreak of the parasitic illness.

The intestinal parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which causes “explosive” diarrhea, had contaminated lettuce sold in 15 states, including Pennsylvania.
